iPhone 5 May Get Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text Feature

So now, we might get a new feature of Text to Speech in the next generation iPhone by Apple. The Patently Apple reports, Apple has filed a patent application for a system that provides you the ability of converting text to speech and vice versa on iPhone. The system for Apple filed a patent, would be also helpful in loudy background environment and as well as at those places where user can't talk loudly.
According to a new Apple patent application that was published this morning by the US Patent and Trademark Office, future iPhone's are likely to provide end users with effective new ways of communicating in both noisy environments like a restaurant or even during a quiet office meeting without stirring a mouse.

For this purpose, Apple might add a new sensor in handset for noise detection. And the new system will work like this; when the user at loudy environment, the iPhone automatically convert the speech from the end into the text. Dual sim iPhone 5?

Another new rumor being circulated now by iDealsChina, a Chinese smartphone parts reseller, is that the upcoming iPhone 5 will have two SIM card trays to support dual-SIM cards.

iDealsChina believes this feature will make it possible for owners of the iPhone5 to contain two service lines which could operate two sim numbers at the same time.

This freture would be great for travellers who could use a home sim for their home network and a global sim that will allow for roaming. Also, employees could use their iphone 5g for work on one sim and for business on another.

The rumor presented by iDealsChina seems a bit dubious, though, and 9to5 Mac has chimed in with their own theory, suggesting that the iPhone 5 will be a world phone sporting Qualcomm's Gobi chip, which will combine CDMA and GSM support into a singular design.

This means that the iPhone 5 could either be used on Verizon's CDMA network or AT&T's GSM network in the States, and could also roam to any country using either CDMA or GSM technologies. Whether the feature will allow dual or simultaneous services through different carriers is possible is uncertain, but if the iPhone 5 does allow simultaneous carrier services, you could theoretically have a Verizon and AT&T number all on one device.

The White iPhone Hero

An interesting and somewhat funny piece of information that iDB reader @EpicGameReviews sent us about the white iPhone 4. If you go to Apple's website, right click on the image of the white iPhone 4 on the homepage, and select "view image" or "image info", you will see how Apple named the image: white_iphone_hero_20110425.jpg.

Does Apple really consider the white iPhone 4 as a hero? I highly doubt it. Does Apple web team have a funny sense of humor? Most likely…

UPDATE: Thanks iDB readers for pointing out how ignorant I am. I had absolutely no idea what a hero shot was until today. But hey, to my defense, I'm French and I'm still learning English everyday. Especially today </embarrassed face>It's always nice to see larger companies joking around a little bit.

How Does AT&T Detect Unofficial iPhone Tethering?

As we've reported earlier, AT&T continues to clamp down on unofficial iPhone tethering, which is one of the main reasons users jailbreak their iPhone.

There has been a lot of debate and speculation on how AT&T detects the unofficial iPhone tethering. Android Police has provided some insight into how AT&T is able to identify users who are using the unofficial tethering option. Android Police explains:

Jailbroken iPhones typically use the same tethering technique as a standard iPhone, the one that's already present in iOS. This method exposes tethering activity quite readily, because the iPhone, when in tethering mode, sends traffic through an alternate APN (AT&T access point/router) for the express purpose of identifying the traffic as tethered data. This makes it extremely easy for AT&T to identify whether or not an iOS device is utilizing tethering, and just how much of their data is consumed via tethering.

Some tethering applications for iOS make use of alternative methods and route tethered traffic through the phone's normal data APN, but by and large, most jailbreakers stick with the stock application because it's easy to use and doesn't require any complicated setup. In fact, many iPhone users jailbreak for the sole purpose of avoiding AT&T's tethering fees (for why, see next section). These are the people AT&T's is going after.

According to Android Police, popular jailbreak apps such as MyWi and Tetherme use the tethering APN instead of using the normal data APN.

It's not clear if PdaNet that has been updated recently to hide unofficial tethering by masking the packets uses iPhone's normal data APN to go undetected (assuming it does). If PdaNet's solution works then we're quite sure that other developers will soon release an updated version of their jailbreak apps to stay ahead of the cat and mouse game with AT&T.

It is unfortunate that carriers are charging users for the tethering option or don't allow some features or apps to work to use iPhone's 3G data connection (work only over Wi-Fi). Ideally, we should be able to use the data the way we want as we've paid for it.

Screw iPhone 5 rumors, the nano may be getting games

iPod nano rumors seem to be heating up this week. It started with a "leaked" nano case that shows off a rear-facing camera. Now, a patent has surfaced that shows the iPod nano not only gaining a camera, but also motion sensors and games.

Yup, you read that right.Video games on your nano. It wouldn't be the first time that Apple managed to sneak games onto an iPod with a small screen. The original iPod shipped with a hidden edition of Brick, a game originally developed by Steve Wozniak. Down the road Apple also added Parachute, Solitaire, and Music Quiz. Then it was officially game on time. Apple announced in September 2006 that games would be coming to the iTunes store and would include 9 other games for the iPod, including Bejewled. Again, it should be noted that these games did not require iOS and shipped long before both iPod touch and iPhone.

 

It seems that Apple's at least thinking about bringing games of this variety back to the iPod nano. Not every patent filed by Apple comes to fruition, so there's also a chance that this doesn't happen at all. That being said, there are a couple of things I wouldn't mind seeing in a new updated iPod nano.

1. FaceTime. The ability to take FaceTime calls from my iWatch would fantastic.
2. iOS notifications. James Gifford brought this one up in the comments a couple of days ago. The more I think of it, the more I think he's on to something. Imagine getting your iOS notifications to your iWatch? Missed calls, appointment reminders, and text messages would be fantastic on my wrist. FANTASTIC.

Apple MacBooks Have Thunderbolt, iPhone 5 Possible feature

Apple has just introduced Thunderbolt technology into its iMacs and MacBooks so it stands to reason that the iPhone 5 could possibly feature this new port. The latest news surrounding the Web comes via GizmoCrunch by way of SemiAccurate reporting that the iPhone5 could incorporate Thunderbolt technology, it seems that Mini-Displayport could be replaced with Thunderbolt I/O port (Light Peak) to give customers a much faster data transfer speed as well as charge up times simultaneously.

You may have heard in the iPhone 5 news this week about a deadly fire that broke out in one Apple's top Chinese components suppliers' factories, and how the loss of life and inventory would affect both the iPad 2 review and iPhone 5. Blogs like Computerworld reported that the fire in Foxconn's iPad 2 warehouse directly affected iPad 2 assembly, stating by way of collecting reports from across the blogosphere that: "This tragedy will have a great impact on the iPad 2 production line," and that "two people were killed and 16 injured, 3 seriously."

While at first glance this piece would seem to be a prime example of reliable journalism, a closer look at the piece's title reveals how misleading and irresponsible the crux of this report truly is: "iPhone 5 release date delay, iPad 2 freeze: Foxconn factory fire."

Huh? What's this about the iPhone5?

Folks, there is absolutely no solid evidence to support that this explosion will affect the release of the iPhone 5g, or that Foxconn has even begun to manufacture iPhone 5 components. It is yet another way of reconstituting Apple-related news to make an impact on the iPhone 5 hype cycle.

Read the Computerworld article and all of the other corresponding reports: there is no actual reporting about the iPhone 5 being affected as a result of the explosion. All of the news on the Foxconn explosion and fire focuses on the causes of the explosion, the casualties, and its potential impact on the iPad 2.

Ascribing an impact to the iPhone 5 is beyond speculative — its presumptuous.

Just to make sure, I went back into the annals of Google News to find what I could on anything recent that points to active production of components for the iPhone 5. The last story to make its rounds was on March 18th, when a rumor surfaced via 9 to 5 Mac that a Foxconn staffer had leaked photos of prototypes, which results in a slew of new purported iPhone 5 pictures and specs.

Prototypes are one thing — full-on production is another.

Aside from that rumor, there has been little else to suggest that there is any production activity going on at Foxconn. And given the arrest of several Foxconn staffers recently over leaking photos of the iPad 2 a year before its release, it is even doubtful that 9 to 5 Mac's Foxconn source would be brave enough to deliver a true photo of an iPhone prototype.

Is it possible that the recent Foxconn explosion could have affected the iPhone 5 production timetable in some way? Sure, it's a possibility. It's also possible that the tsunami in Japan affected it. Or a mosquito flapping its wings in Rhode Island that led to some improbable chain-reaction that could shift the release of the iPhone 5. But all in all, it is the iPad 2 that is likely to be impacted by the explosion and not some phantom, fabled iPhone — so why do tech news sources present it to us as breaking iPhone5 news?

Oh yes, now I remember: it gets the iPhone community buzzing again.

Ultrasnow Unlock iPhone 5

After a few hours after the release of PwnageTool to jailbreak and Redsn0w Untethered IOS 4.3.3, the Dev-Team has released an update ultrasn0w , the tool that allows you to unlock the phone part of iPhone foreigners, so that adds compatibility with IOS 4.3.3.

This new version does not unlock any new baseband. Users have an unlocked iPhone alien must wait for further instructions from the Dev-Team.

Apple fixes with iOS 4.3.3 not the current jailbreak (Userland) exploit. This is the unbound activated with a 100 percent file system access, since the iOS 4.3.1 exists, even in the latest IOS firmware possible.

The 'Unlock-Ultrasn0w' was also an adaptation (v.1.2.3), but dwells more on a very old-baseband (01:59:00, 04:26:08, 05:11:07, 05:12:01, 05:13:04, 06:15:00 ) and is therefore only a very limited audience to good use. As currently sold devices with a high probability of a newer (not supported) version have or are issued completely independent (which is clearly the best way), the audience is limited to former importers and older T-Mobile customers.

iPhone 5 Image

There seems to be some buzz around the iPhone 5 having its camera flash repositioned as we have previously reported, and also reported on a possible reason for the moving of the flash on the next iOS smartphone, and now a new image has hit the next which is purportedly of the rear of an iPhone5 that shows the device with a repositioned flash.

According to the guys over at Phone Dog by way of Macrumors, the new image posted by Apple Pro and apparently originating from Chinese site Weibo, is said to be that of the iPhone 5 pictures back and has the flash over on the right side and the camera on the left.

Having said all that, as you probably know images such as these are easily faked but does tie up with previous rumours that the iPhone 5g camera flash might be repositioned in the upcoming handset, so it could be plausible.

So the usual applies with this, treat firmly as pure speculation until such times as some confirmation comes along one way or another, full image can be seen below.

iPhone 5 release date delay related

Apple's mythical iPhone 5 delayed? Well, Apple might not care because iPhone shipments increased last quarter.

Looks like Apple has a valid reason to delay the launch of the iPhone5, or the next generation Apple smartphone that might feature specs improvements. According to iSuppli's Q1 report, the emerging smartphone giant increased its shipments of iPhones (phones like iPhone 4) in the first quarter of 2011 by 15%.

Other phone manufacturers like Research in Motion and HTC also recorded an increase of phone shipments, while Samsung and Motorola's phone shipments suffered a decline. Phone leader Nokia is also down by 15%. Samsung, Motorola and HTC are considered as top manufacturers of Android smartphones.

Samsung's decline is only 1.6 points, while Motorola suffered a big decline with 16% less shipments compared to its last Q4 2010 performance. Samsung and Motorola are expected to release LTE smartphones this year, the Samsung Droid Charge and the Motorola Droid Bionic. Both smartphones are shipping with Android, and will use Verizon's fast 4G/LTE frequency bands.

According to rumors, Apple will delay the launch of iPhone 5g, and will unveil a new version of its iOS operating system compatible with older iPhone versions like the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4. No words yet about the official release date of iPhone 5, but most of the rumors are claiming that the Cupertino, California-based company will launch the iPhone 5 in USA in September of this year.

Note: When it comes to operating system market share, Google's mobile operating system Android is the biggest gainer, while RIM's BlackBerry and Nokia's Symbian are struggling.

We've heard a lot of rumors about the iPhone5 lately, from camera specs to release dates to ultra-thin mockups. But if you think you know all the scuttlebutt about Apple's future plans, you're not looking far enough ahead. Already, the rumor mill is churning for the iPhone 6–no, seriously. According to Japan's Nikkan newspaper, the iPhone 6 will feature a new kind of LCD display with "low-temperature polysilicon" technology, allowing for a lighter, thinner phone that consumes less power than its predecessors. (Expect Apple to call it the "Insanely Great Super Retina Display" or something similar.)

As AppleInsider explains, a so-called "p-Si LCD" allows manufacturers to put optical sensors, signal processors and other circuits directly on the glass substrate. This would save space inside the phone body by reducing the size of the display's thin-film transistor.

Sharp will reportedly begin mass production of the screens next spring, ahead of the iPhone 6 launch in 2012.

But that's all there is to report for now, and I would strongly advise against worrying about what kind of phone Apple is going to release in a year and a half, or whenever the iPhone 6 arrives. This industry's moving fast, and promises of "thinner, lighter and faster" don't amount to much.

Having said that, if the iPhone 7 doesn't create holograms, levitate, teleport, and cook my dinner, I'm going to be hugely disappointed.

New iPhone 5 Mockup Is Ultra Sexy

Stay calm, it's only a mockup. But Apple's iPhone 5 will be either a thing of beauty or the ugliest phone in existence — depending on your tastes — should any element of a new but credible Photoshopped suggestion make it into the end product.

The image was created by former Engadget chief Joshua Topolsky based on a sketched design from one of his sources as well as credible rumors he's heard. Topolsky admits the sketch might be little more than one of many prototype designs, but what the hey–it's fun to speculate!

Rumors have already suggested a virtually bezel-free screen, for example, courtesy of glass bonding breakthroughs at Apple HQ. Topolsky claims this allows for a slightly larger screen area of 3.7 inches — 0.2 inches larger than the iPhone 4, but still retaining the ultra high-resolution Retina Display of over 300 pixels per inch.

It's even suggested that, somehow, the microphone and speaker might be behind the glass, although this isn't shown in the mockup. Apple has made much of how it carves MacBooks out of solid aluminum using lasers, including making microscopic holes for microphones and for power lights to shine through. It's possible the same techniques might have evolved so they can be used on glass, allowing sound to pass through.

In profile, Topolsky's iPhone 5 has a teardrop shape, rather like the MacBook Air, tapering towards the bottom, although Topolsky says this might not be as extreme as his mockup suggests, due to his lack of Photoshop skills.

One big change is the home button, which is expanded to become a "gesture area." How this works isn't clear, and in Topolsky's mockup the home button area is wide but not tall, indicating only side-to-side swipe gestures are possible. It's possible this is a labor-saving trick so users can simply swipe to activate the phone, rather than hit the home button first, and then swipe across the screen.

Although not featured in the mockup, the sketch Topolsky saw also showed induction-based power, which is to say, wire-free battery charging. This is already possible using third-party products so it isn't a leap of imagination, and there's been long-term rumors of Apple being interested in such technologies

The sketch also showed what Topolsky calls a "swipe area," which he suggests could be a near field communication (NFC) area. It's been rumored that NFC will be coming to the iPhone 5, although it would be strange of Apple to draw attention to a small area of the phone for NFC purposes. NFC payments are designed around the idea of simply tapping any part of a device against a receiver

Creating rumors and even mockups is a crime with no consequences. Nobody's going to chide Topolsky when the iPhone 5 arrives and his mockups turn out to be bunkum. In fact, many Apple-watchers suggest that the iPhone 5 won't look much different from the iPhone 4. However, there's little doubt that Topolsky's sexy imagery pours petrol onto the flames of the iPhone 5 hype machine.

Apple execs focused on software-driven iPhone product cycle, says analyst

Fresh off a meeting with senior executives at Apple, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said the company sees product cycles as being driven by software rather than hardware and is expected to announce major software updates at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

After meeting with Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, Senior Vice President of Retail Ron Johnson and Vice President of Internet Services Eddy Cue, Huberty issued a note to clients reiterating her Overweight rating for the company and downplaying concerns about the company's margins and the possibility of iPhone saturation.Huberty also restated her belief that the company's Earnings Per Share could reach $50 in 2013, driven by "lower priced iPhones, iPod like market share in tablets, and expanding distribution in China and other emerging markets."

According to Huberty, Apple executives highlighted the fact that "the company generally views product cycles as software driven" during their meeting. Given the software emphasis, Huberty suggested that "major feature/function updates" will come at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which runs from June 6 through June 10 in San Francisco.

After Apple announced that it would "unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS" at the conference, rumors swirled that the company would hold off on announcing a next-generation iPhone as it has in years past.

Though Huberty said Thursday that Apple did not confirm during the meeting whether an iPhone hardware refresh was in place for later this year, she did address investor concerns that a delayed refresh would affect profits. Since Apple sees itself as software focused, major feature updates in iOS 5 and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion are expected to drive sales.

Huberty also took away from her meeting with the company's executives the message that Apple has several "potential tailwinds" that could better the company's margins, such as improved product costs, lower warranty expense and higher iPad ASPs.

Apple is confident that the iPhone has room to grow, according to the analyst. Given that Apple sells the device in just 90 countries and approximately 185 carriers, compared to over 175 countries and more than 575 carriers for competitors, iPhone shipments are expected to continue to grow in a "natural expansion." The iPhone maker also communicated to Huberty that, based on "daily or weekly data from partners," it remains confident in the smartphone's inventory levels.

Huberty also reported that the company "plans to expand current retail stores and build larger new stores (up to 50/yr)" and will free up space for product set-up services to reduce product returns and increase overall transaction size.

Apple Retail has seen phenomenal growth as of late. Earlier this week, one analyst predicted that revenues from brick-and-mortar stores would "continue on a roll" as visitors flocked to the stores to try out the iPad. The first Apple Stores celebrate their 10th anniversary on May 19th.

As of the close of market on Wednesday, shares of Apple stood at $349.57, up $1.37 from Tuesday's close. The company's stock price has risen 8 percent since the beginning of the year.

"Is the iPhone 5 going to be a huge upgrade as opposed to a 3GS-like move?"
